Of course any list about bird movies wouldn't be complete without the most famous of them all. Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963) only grossed $5,385,0001 in the US but was voted the 7th Scariest Movie of all time by a poll carried out on the British public by Channel 5 and The Times in 2006. The movie was based on Daphne Du Maurier's story, "The Birds".

For those of you looking for a dose of documentary reality, there have been a couple less popular documentaries worth mentioning and certainly worth watching. Le Peuple Migrateur (2001) is a film first released in Belgium and later in the US (USD Gross $10,762,178)1 and Canada as "Winged Migration". As you might have already guessed, it's a documentary on the migratory patterns of birds, shot over the course of three years on all seven continents. Another excellent documentary is The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill (2003). This is a documentary (USD Gross $3,058,527)1 about a flock of cherry-headed conures in San Francisco. You can get more up to date information on their web site The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

There are of course a LOT of other movies that have birds and parrots in minor roles. Here are just three examples that you may remember.

  • Dumbo (1941)1 - Where would Dumbo be without the crows and especially Jim Crow? Without the Jim Crow and the "magical feather" Dumbo would never have had the confidence to fly. And let's face it, if Dumbo couldn't fly then we wouldn't be talking about him now would we?
  • Scary Movie 2 (2001)1 - The "Little Bird" character is not one for the kiddies. A large part of the MPAA 'R' Rating for graphic language can be attributed to "Little Bird". But some of you (and me) with a less than sophisticated sense of humor would find it to be humorous.
  • Dumb & Dumber (1994)1 - There were two small bit-part roles for birds in this movie. Unfortunately they were both killed! First it was Petey the parakeet who was killed by Joe 'Mental' Mentalino and later passed off as a live bird to a blind kid. And then there was the rare Icelandic Snow Owl at the Preservation party that Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) accidentally kills with the cork of a bottle.
